Song for Valentine

You wanna know if I know why?
I can't say that I do
Don't understand the evil eye
Or how one becomes two
And I just can't recall what started it all
Or how to begin the end
I ain't here to break it
Just see how far it will bend
Again and again and again
I wanna make it
I wanna make it wit chu
(anytime, anywhere)
Sometimes the same is different
But mostly it's the same
These mysteries of life
That just ain't my thing
If I told you that I knew about the sun and the moon,
I'd be untrue
The only thing I know for sure
Is what I wanna do
I wanna make it
I wanna make it wit chu
(again and again and again)...

This version comes from the last album of QOTSA, Eras Vulgaris, from 2007, but the original composition was born on one of the famous Desert Sessions.
The Desert Sessions are a musical collective series "that cannot be defined". Founded by Josh Homme from QOTSA in 1997. Artists such as Brant Bjork, PJ Harvey, Dave Catching, Nick Oliveri, Mark Lanegan, Chris Goss, Alain Johannes, and many others have contributed as songwriters and musicians.
At Desert Sessions, you play for the sake of music. That’s why it’s good for musicians. If someday that’s not enough anymore, or that’s not the reason behind you doing it--that’s not your raison d’etre--then a quick reminder like Desert Sessions can do so much for you, it’s amazing. It’s easy to forget that this all starts from playing in your garage and loving it.
JOSH HOMME
All began in August 1997 at the Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree when Homme brought together musicians from different bands. The ranch is an old house filled to the brim with rare and unique recording equipment and instruments and is owned by Dave Catching. Songs are written on the spot in matters of hours usually, and no place in the home is safe from the music. Many stories have grown around the Sessions.
We want sex to bleed into the music. At our shows, we want to see half boys and half girls in a utopian world, dancing and drinking.
JOSH HOMME
Mission Acomplished. This is the right song for today. The right video. Enjoy it and put it very loud!

Vive do ar. A saudade.

Neste livro, aqui reunido, existem tentativas.

Tantalized bodies

NEXT WEEK AT BLOOM
Australian-born artist Ron Mueck, renowned for his sculpture 'Dead Dad', shown at the Sensation exhibition in 1997, has created a distinctive body of hyper-real sculpture whose startling power and strangeness have given a fresh impulse to modern sculpture. This catalogue accompanied the show at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, which provided Mueck with the opportunity to create new sculptures, two of which are gigantic.
Whether monumental or smaller than life-size, Ron Mueck’s sculptures are so lifelike that they seem to breathe. Veins, wrinkles, body hair, blemishes… no detail is neglected. The result is so perfect that the resemblance to ‘real life’ is disturbing.
This catalogue includes several photographic essays, commissioned specially to follow the artist through the different phases of his work. In London, a series of photographs was realised in Mueck’s studio over a six-month period. The completed sculptures were then photographed in their exhibition environment at the Fondation Cartier.
An analytical text by Robert Rosenblum, richly illustrated by Mueck’s sculptures, studies his work from the perspective of classical and modern art history.

Mueck's stunning and carefully crafted sculpture has catapulted him into the first rank of the contemporary art world. Exploring reality's ambiguous relationship with artifice. Brilliantly employing the strategies of imitation and illusion, he creates figures that express the contradictions between the real world and the world of the imaginary. His lifelike figures with their veins, wrinkles, sagging skin, and moles have been crafted to such perfection that the remarkably convincing result is deeply perturbing.
Ron Mueck is the son in law of the portuguese acclaimed painter Paula Rego.

Robert Rosenblum is Henry Ittleson Jr. Professor of Modern European Art, Fine Arts, Institute of Fine Arts, New York University.

Why? Why? Why?

O resultado é a comunicação.

The swimming poll

According to a survey regarding the performance of the Government featured on the website of Macau Business magazine almost one third of the voters picked 'none' as they're favourite Secretary, the crucial elements of the executive.
It was an informal question: "Vote in your favorite Secretary to rank the Government Secretaries acording to their performance", it was asked. If the answer is 'none' the meaning is that either the majoraty don't give a damn for governemnt issues or they don't regard any of the Secretaries as having a good performance. Anyhow the first second choice is Francis Tam, the holder of the Economy office.
The poll is not scientific but must be taken in consideration as a fragment of information about the discontentment of the citizens. Take it as you want. It's just an idependent and simple gaze at the public administration staging.

A closer gamble on two sides

The new issue of Macau Closer is here at Bloom. One year after its first release it is spread now into two different magazines, with the integration or in this case the detachment of Macau Closer Lifestyle, the name given to the new extention.
Gambling and Police are on the cover as the main highlight. Patricia Cheong, an entrepeneur of success and ex-Miss Macau, is smilling at us on the face of Lifestyle's window. Fashion, shopping and the Year of the Rat build up the main body of this magazine.
We have to pull out our friend Clara Brito and Lines Lab and give her a big hug and the best wishes for the future. For all the effort of building an original brand in Macau and for going there on a road that others are afraid to step.
Bloom is also present on this issue. As usual on the monthly book reccomendations but also on photography affairs, going on the challenge of fulfilling the first Fashion photo-shoot, featuring Clara Brito and Lines Lab, and as a special request for doing the cover of the main issue. We were pleased to extend Bloomland to a different style of life.
All the wishes of a long life are extended, of course, to Macau Closer.

Time is different at Bloomland!

This is the ad from Ponte 16 that is broadcasting on TV channels from Macau and Hong Kong. For 3 seconds [starting at 00.30] you can see Bloom. It's a pleasure - and a privilege - to be on this little movie about Macau, focused on its historical places. We are involved into the same concept of time where things happen in a different pace and where the flocks of yesterday are mixed with the whirls of the future. Yes, that is the idea of Bloomland for sure - and much more!

What exactly is it and what do terms like "mutate" actually mean? John Farndon answers these questions and also investigates: the history of pandemics - and how this one might be different; the last great flu outbreak - the Spanish flu of 1919; what a virus is and how it spreads; how antiviral drugs and vaccines work; how the statistics of death rates are worked out; what the government's emergency plans are. 50 Facts That Should Change the World 2.0
by Jessica Williams

Jessica Williams revisits her classic series of snapshots of life in the twenty-first century. Revised and updated with lots of new material, this book is every bit as vital as the first edition. From the inequalities and absurdities of the so-called developed world to the vast scale of suffering wreaked by war, famine, and AIDS in developing countries, it paints a picture of incredible contrasts.
The 2.0 edition again contains an eclectic selection of facts addressing a broad range of global issues, now with added emphasis on climate change, the decline in human rights and democratic freedoms around the world, the unexpected global impact of corporate growth, sports and media madness and inequality, and lots of updated facts and figures. Each is followed by a short essay explaining the story behind the fact, fleshing out the bigger problem lurking behind the numbers. Real-life stories, anecdotes, and case studies help to humanize the figures and make clear the human impact of the bald statistics. All of the facts remind us that whether we like to think of it or not, the world is interconnected and civilization is a fragile concept.

Macau is a city that moves at a sedate pace. After the frenetic pace of Hong Kong, it comes as a blissful reprieve. With its lush landscapes, sandy shores, heritage buildings, beautiful gardens, cross-continental cuisine, Macau has emerged as a tourist hot spot.

Today we are listening to

Peter Björn and John

Peter Björn and John were formed in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1999. Made up of members Peter Morén on vocals, guitar, and harmonica; Björn Yttling on vocals, bass, vocals, and keyboards; and John Eriksson on drums, percussion, and vocals, the band is influenced by the sounds of classic '60s baroque pop, power pop, and new wave, but the guys aren't revivalists. Instead they created some of the most exciting and original indie rock of the mid-2000s. The band began playing gigs soon after forming and quickly began appearing on compilations alongside other artists. After releasing three singles, the band released its self-titled first album in 2002 on the tiny Beat That! label. After more shows and more singles and an EP, the group jumped to the Planekonomi label in 2004 and released the Beats, Traps and Backgrounds EP. It was soon followed by the wonderful 2004 full-length release Falling Out, which was picked up for American release by Hidden Adenda in late 2005. The record placed them, along with The Concretes, the Shout Out Louds and the The Legends, at the forefront of the sparkling wave of great pop bands coming from Sweden. Their third album, Writer's Block, followed a year later.
The third album deserves every bit of attention and hype it's received, from large media outlets right down to the lowliest blog. It's a major work of post-everything indie rock that has enough hooks, production genius, and emotional strength to make other rock acts (indie or otherwise) sound like they are just wasting everyone's time. The group's previous two albums were excellent power pop records with an excess of brains and style, whereas Writer's Block scales back the guitars in favor of subtler arrangements that deliver just as much power sonically and ups the stakes in every other way. Every song has that kind of stripped-down production style that brings the music fully to life. Check the steel drums on "Let's Call It Off," the shh-shh-shh percussion on "The Chills," or the majestic tubular bells of "Roll the Credits" for Spectorian shoegaze production magic. Or look at the infectious single "Young Folks" for the key to why the record sounds so right. [SOURCE ALL MUSIC]

Experiencing the Chinese New Year

Those of us who have been around for a few years now, have already grown accustomed to the traditions of this big celebration of the Lunar New Year. We are now used to receiving or giving the red Lai-see envelopes with the lucky money, used to seeing all the Door Gods, used to all the noise and we are also used to spotting big sofas, tables, chairs and all kinds of household stuff dumped in the rubbish bins. Yes, it's the time to renew the home, cut the hair, clear the old debts, wear new clothes and to renew the life itself. It's the happy and red season of the Cosmic Renewal. It's the season to finally make a break in the business, visit the relatives and pay a tribute to the Gods.
For those of you who are here for the first time, do stay around, enjoy and absorb all that this event has to offer to the eyes and mind of a foreigner. It's an amazing and intense experience. You'll be dazzled with all the happiness. During these days most traditional commerce will be closed and everybody will go out to celebrate and burn firecrackers! It's the most noisy season in all China!
Oh, and if you are unmarried don't be surprised when a Chinese friend offers you money in a red envelope. It's the time for the generous offer of money as a wish of wealth and fortune for the coming year.

May the New Year be happy and wealthy for you,
And bring us a big load of red packets too!!

And if you want to know a bit or a lot more about Chinese New Year and other festivals of China, here's a suggestion that you may find in your Bloom:

Mooncakes and Hungry Ghosts: Festivals of China
,

China Books
An outstanding introduction to the variety of popular Chinese festivals, including Lunar New Year, Qingming (Tomb-sweeping Day), Dragon Boat, Mid-Autumn, and more!

Chinese New Year almost here!

The Lunar New Year is the most joyous, sensational and colorful of all the Chinese Festivals.
Despite this year's celebration being a cold one, let's hope this is a sign of prosperity and of a blooming new season ahead.

Coming days 7, 8 and 9 of February will welcome the Year of the Rat.
It's a new beginning of the cycle of 12 years and 12 animals of the Zodiac. There are many ways to tell the legend of the lunar calendar. Apparently the Buddha once summoned all living creatures to come before him but only twelve came at his bidding and the Rat was the one who won The Great Race.

"The crafty Rat sees chance dancing in every corner. She carefully hoards her finds, keeping bits of treasure and trash for a ainy day. In spite of her careful, thrifty ways, the Rat has many friends. Her clever charm and dazzling ambition are hard to resist."
A small excerpt from: My Mom is a Dragon and My Dad is a Boar, by Tricia Morrisey

To find out more about the Great Race and the animals of the Zodiac, we suggest that you come to Bloom and find this and many other books about the amazing Chinese New Year! [A THINGSASIAN PRESS EDITION]

Dazzling dimensions

It's with great enthusiasm that we welcome the opening of the new field of entertainment named Ponte 16. Is just a few steps away from us and we regard them with cheerful spirit.
When we came to this area of Macau we praised its unique ambience shaped on the lines of history and placid dominions. Now we have new neighbors. Even if they are conceived on large proportions and on different targets I guess we’re sailing the same way, pushing this area to the gleam of another era showing the truthful heart of Macau as a city of culture and historic values, with its genuine presence and not a replication of something else.
We send our best wishes to all the Ponte 16 team extended to the new Sofitel Hotel who will bring an all new component to Macau's lifestyle.

Doris Lessing last night formally received her Nobel prize for literature, saying: "Thank you does not seem enough."
Ill health prevented Lessing, 88, from travelling to Sweden for a Nobel presentation in December. Instead, a ceremony took place for the prolific author at the Wallace Collection in London.
Lessing told the gathering: "Thank you does not seem enough when you've won the best of them all. It is astonishing and amazing. I would like to say that there isn't anywhere to go from here."
Lessing said she could hear her father's voice saying: "You're getting above yourself my girl and I don't like it."
The frail author, wearing a red velvet outfit, was helped to and from the stage to receive the Nobel insignia from Ambassador of Sweden Staffan Carlsson.
He told her she was "crowned with a prize you have long deserved". In Lessing's Nobel lecture, previously published, she contrasted the experience in Africa where people were clamouring for books, with the way the west has been "seduced" by the internet.
Lessing's publisher, HarperCollins, announced it would be giving 10,000 fiction and non-fiction books to Zimbabwe in her name.
Actors Juliet Stevenson and Alan Rickman read excerpts from Lessing's new novel to the audience. Due out in May, Alfred and Emily speculates about how her parents' lives might have gone if there had been no first world war.
In October Lessing became only the 11th woman to win the prize, regarded as the most prestigious in literature, in its 106-year history. She was born Doris May Taylor to British parents in Persia, now Iran, and later moved to what is now Zimbabwe.

The art of tuning

Tired of the cold that arrived and stayed in Macau? Well, you have to wait a few more days untill it goes off. But this is the weather now, you can taste it and enjoy it for a while. Forget the hot and humid city, forget the tropics, forget the summer. This is like going to a chinese restaurant or a shopping mall in summer time with overpowered air-cons. Believe it or not is such as cold, it freezes you to the bones. Oh so nice!

- E o José Borges, que me dizes?
- Quem?
É gajo do futebol?
Daaasss!
- Eu vi logo. Não se pode falar nada contigo. Também me saíste uma grande companhia.
- Mas o gajo era cego, era? Andava aos trambolhões?
- Vá deixa lá. Não interessa. Diz-me mazé, aquela miúda de ontem, grande naco, deste cabo dela?

Go wild and blow

Julio Cortazar is a revolutionary but one far from home, not a political revolutionary but one that roams the further reaches of the psyche, just beyond where civilization says it is safe to go. Every single one of his many short stories is worth reading. So, if available, get them all.

A young girl spends her summer vacation in a country house where a tiger roams... A man reading a mystery finds out too late that he is the murderer's victim... In the stories collected here - including "Blow-Up;' on which Antonioni based his film - Julio Cortazar explores the boundary where the everyday meets the mysterious, perhaps even the terrible. This is the most brilliant and celebrated book of short stories by a master of the form.

The full report

Julio Cortázar was born on August 26, 1914, in Brussels, Belgium, where his Argentine parents, Julio José Cortázar and María Herminia Descotte de Cortázar, were on a business trip. Once World War I began, the family was forced to remain in Europe for several years. Finally in 1918 they returned to Argentina and settled in a suburb of Buenos Aires. Cortázar's father left the family soon afterwards, and Julio and his sister were raised by their mother and aunt.

Starting at a young age, Cortázar demonstrated both a love of and aptitude for literature and received nurturing and guidance in his writing from his teachers. Cortázar received primary (1932) and secondary (1935) teaching degrees, but due to economic reasons, he was forced to cut short his studies at Universidad de Buenos Aires and begin teaching in the remote provincial towns of Bolívar and Chivilcoy. From 1944 to 1945 Cortázar taught French literature at Universidad de Cuyo, Mendoza, but in 1946 he resigned as a result of his political views and his anti-Perón demonstrations.

Back in Buenos Aires, Cortázar worked for the publishing group Cámara Argentina del Libro (1946-1948), completed a translation degree in record time, and worked as a public translator (1948-1951). During these years his short stories “Casa Tomada” and “Lejana” appeared in Jorge Luis Borges' literary magazine Los Anales de Buenos Aires, and he published a theoretical work, Teoría del Túnel (1947). The novel El Examen, written in 1950, was initially rejected by the publisher and only released posthumously in 1986. In 1951 Cortázar published the short story collection Bestiario and began his voluntary exile from Argentina by moving to Paris. In the French capital Cortázar quickly became a translator for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), a position he would hold for the rest of his life.

On August 23, 1953, Cortázar married fellow Argentine translator Aurora Bernárdez. Although they divorced after twenty years, the two remained close friends. His second marriage was to Canadian writer Carol Dunlop with whom he collaborated on Los Autonautas de la Aosmopista: O, Un Viaje Atemporal París-Marsella (1983), a surrealistic account of their month-long journey on the French highway.

Cortázar belonged to the “boom” generation of Latin American writers who broke new ground with their work during the 1950s and 1960s. He is perhaps most well known for the highly experimental novel Rayuela (1963) and the socio-politically based Libro de Manuel (1973). His literary production included other novels – Los Premios [1960], 62: Modelo para Armar [1968] and Un tal Lucas [1979]; poetry – Los Reyes [1949], Pameos y Meopas [1971], and Salvo el crepúsculo [1984]) and essays – La Casilla de los Morelli [1973], Argentina: Años de Almabradas Culturales [1984] and Nicaragua: Tan Violentamente Dulce [1983] — but predominately consisted of short stories: Final del Juego [1950], Las Armas Secretas [1959], Historias del Cronopios y de Famas [1962], Todos los Fuegos el Fuego [1966], Alguien que Anda por Ahí y Otros Relatos [1977], and Queremos Tanto a Glenda [1980].

Cortázar was also a frequent traveler and advocate of human rights. He was particularly concerned about the torture of political prisoners and the repressive rule of dictators in Latin America. A socialist, he supported both the Cuban and Nicaraguan revolutions. Cortázar promoted his views through speaking engagements and political essays. He also made several trips to the United States and participated in conferences at University of California, Berkeley (1980).

Cortázar died of leukemia and heart disease on February 12, 1984. He was buried in Montparnasse Cemetery alongside Carol Dunlop.

JORGE LUIS BORGES IN CHINA
If you go to Spain on the following weeks you can't miss this one. It opened two days ago in Madrid the exhibition "El Atlas de Borges" that shows the travels of the argentinian writer around the world. A collection of 130 pictures mostly from the personal archive of María Kodama, the companion and the eyes of the writer, represented now at the Fundacíon Borges. The presentation, who includes a set of original texts tracing the travelogue of every journey, was previously in Barcelona and was a big success. We would give everything to bring it to Macau.

In the meantime...

Meantime

Far away, far away,
Far away from here...
There is no worry after joy
Or away from fear
Far away from here.

Her lips were not very red,
Not her hair quite gold.
Her hands played with rings.
She did not let me hold
Her hands playing with gold.

She is something past,
Far away from pain.
Joy can touch her not, nor hope
Enter her domain,
Neither love in vain.

Perhaps at some day beyond
Shadows and light
She will think of me and make
All me a delight
All away from sight.

Fernando Pessoa, English Poems

Longing in radiance

My stay in Trinidad is drawing to a close. I only have nine months left. Then I shall go away never to come back... I want to satisfy myself that I have lived as I wanted to live. As yet I feel that the philosophy I will have to expand in my books is only superficial. I am longing to see something of life.

These words were written by a 17-year-old V. S. Naipaul about to see something of life by means of a scholarship to Oxford. Between Father and Son is the record of an extraordinarily rich correspondence primarily between V. S. Naipaul (Vido in these letters) and his father, Seepersad Naipaul. It begins with Vido's arrival in England in 1950 and ends in 1953 with Seepersad's death. As a sad postscript, there are letters reporting what Seepersad did not live to see: the publication of Vido's first novel.
Seepersad is a man we feel we already know from A House for Mr. Biswas, a book whose title character was based on him. Seepersad (like Mr. Biswas) was a melancholy man, working for a Trinidad newspaper, frustrated by the demands of his family, by dependence on his in-laws and by poverty and debt. In rereading A House for Mr. Biswas I came across a passage that seems to represent Seepersad's state of mind (as fictionalized by his son) at the time his son was in Oxford:

"And though he had at first found the newspaper office stimulating with its urgency, the daily miracle of seeing what he had written in the afternoon transformed into solid print read by thousands the next morning, his enthusiasm, unsupported by ambition, faded. His work became painstaking and labored: the zest went out of his articles as it had gone out of himself. He grew dull and querulous and ugly. Living had always been a preparation, a waiting. And so the years had passed; and now there was nothing to wait for. Except the children. Suddenly the world opened for them. Savi got a scholarship and went abroad. Two years later, Anand got a scholarship and went to England."

Many of the themes familiar to the reader of V. S. Naipaul emerge in this correspondence: the enigma of arrival, the sadness of separation and exile, neocolonial ambition and the effort to find one's center. Naipaul once remarked, "All my work is really one; I'm really writing one big book," and indeed in these letters one finds the seeds for that opus.
[BY ABRAHAM VERGHESE ON THE NEW YORK TIMES] [FOLLOW IT HERE]

The letters collected in this book illuminate with unalloyed candor the relationship between a sacrificing father and his determined son as they encourage each other to persevere with their writing. For though his father’s literary aspirations would go unrealized, Naipaul’s triumphant career would ultimately vindicate his beloved mentor’s legacy.

The crazy woman

Today a woman passed by
She was mutely weeping

We were all astray
Yes, shopping!
I saw her body passing on the alley
Back and forth
for different times
She has lost her son.

What?

Everybody thought she was crazy
Why would she lost her son, just like that
But then there she was
She couldn't shout at all
She even didn't cry madly
She wept.

So we looked

Couldn't see there a tear
While we were shopping
And nothing more
Like nobody cared.

Will Self?

Looking back over my files of unrealised projects, I found this one from 2004 about a group of average man – and woman – superheroes, entitled The Fantastic Four:

"Phillip Glass read a lot of newspapers and magazines. A great unruly thatch of them covered his kitchen table. Often his wife, Thelma, would take armfuls out into the garden and burn them. Phillip Glass discovered, through his assiduous – and yet casual – newsprint trawling that as his life winnowed down to seeming-nothing and suburban entropy, he had become, statistically, the most common individual in Britain – if not the wider world.

Phillip Glass was, he realised, a member of a silent minority that lay in the densely-shaded intersection of the most complex imaginable Venn diagram. His marital status was typical; his sexual orientation predictable; his income, median; his consumer profile, lacking in salience; his occupation, office bound. But far from Glass relapsing into the mild depression we might expect (we recall at this juncture, Beckett's 'Soon we will be old, then we will be dead'), one ordinary morning, when a senior colleague from Corporate HQ was late for a meeting, Glass discovered that he had Amazing Powers. His very anonymity and intuitive ubiquity made it possible for Glass to assume the role of the missing colleague, while yet attending the meeting himself. This was not a straightforward impersonation – but something more numinous and complex. Glass was the ultimate faceless bureaucrat, and as such anyone present could see anyone not present's face projected on to his fleshy screen..."

It goes on; Statman – as Glass styles himself – discovers Bigman, Crazy Cat Woman and Neurogirl, all of them bog-standard types with incredible powers. Together they begin to right the world's wrongs. Of course, then along came the TV series Heroes and rendered my novel idea otiose. Am I pissed about this? Am I hell – nothing is ever lost in the creative economy – unlike the real one.

Will Self is represented at Bloom in many and different ways. You should not hesitate to come and give him try. Will not change your Self, but for sure you will never forget him. The same way, you will never forgive him. So what are you waiting for?

XX.
