Apart from that

Will you get to this point?
Will you believe?
Will you shout?

Believe it!
We're gonna put the city in flames
We're going to tear everything down
Your envious life
Your mishaps
And it's just a game

To blast boredom
To beat the bank
To roll it up
Against your will to stay

We'll blaze the fence lines of rainstorms
Deluges
Avalanches
Torments!

And on the event
Of ever circumstance
Rapture will rise
And glee!

Shout, believe and get here!
Otherwise...

Addressing the Language Question: a study of the poetry of Edwin Thumboo, by Jonathan Webster [City University of Hong Kong]

ABSTRACT
The focus of this lecture, Addressing the Language Question is on applying linguistic analysis to the creative work of the Singaporean poet, Edwin Thumboo. The aim is to make the reader aware of the linguistic resources developed by the poet as the basis for his unique technique, i.e. exploring how the poet combines grammar and metaphor to make meaning.
Approaching the texts from a functional linguistic perspective reveals the multiple layers of meaning and metaphor which go into producing highly textured, grammatically intricate works of verbal art.

THE SPEAKER
Prof. Jonathan Webster is Head of the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics, and Director of The Halliday Centre for Intelligent Applications of Language Studies at the City University of Hong Kong. He previously taught at the National University of Singapore before coming to Hong Kong in 1987. His research areas include text linguistics and computational linguistics. Poetry Reading with Edwin Thumboo

We were planning it for a while, the start of our new place in some other part of the city. It will get shape at St. Lazarus District, a new area targeted from the Government of Macau to be dedicated to Creativity. If you cross a line, it don't need to be straight, between St. Paul Ruins or the Mount Fortress and Tap Seac Square it's just in the middle.
For our first event we joined forces with the Department of English of the University of Macau who invited the acclaimed Singaporean poet Edwin Thumboo for a series of lectures in the university in Taipa, from whom arise the opportunity to have a different session in town. So it is. It's the first 2008 Bloom Encounter at Albergue, a new space dedicated to Creative Sustainability, where Bloom is germinating a new seed and assembling a lineup of periodic happenings.
We are honored to initiate this set of events with this collaboration from the University of Macau which is bringing to all of us such a distinguished author.
The event will happen this Wednesday, March 26 at 6.30 p.m.

We thank you all with most gratitude for your presence and for your dedicated support to Bloom.

In short term we'll have a space where you can also buy books and beauty fool things for your SOUL in full power. For now we'll going to put the lights on and going on first gear. Brakes loose.
STAY TUNED!

I could tell you that was me
I could even tell you that it could not be anyone else
But
I've looked at the trees
Outside
Through out the window

There's this light wind
That blows them apart
So much

Just like me

So very much

And I keep hearing myself
Yes, there's someone there
There's someone under the trees
Shaking them off with both hands
One and another

You're not alone!

So why telling that was only I
If there's someone else
Blowing all winds away

Coelhinhos

Perguntam-me muitas vezes como nascem as minhas peças.
A sério.

1000th birthpost

As time passed by we missed the first anniversary of our blog. It went on last Saturday - Oh dear we left the bottle of champagne on the freezer! - and we didn't notice it. Yes, one year after we got to this humble stage and now we sail. Lights on. Clear throat. And we sing. "Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you..."
But that's not all. The best of it, if we were kind of fundamentalist we would get drunk tonight just for that, it's that this post is the thousandth time we bother to come here write something. Yes, 1000! Fuck, that's a lot!
[SIM, NO DIA 15 DE MARÇO ESTE ESPAÇO FEZ UM ANO DE VIDA.]

Do you dare to ask?

In 1958 I wrote the following:
'There are no hard distinctions between what is real and what is unreal, nor between what is true and what is false. A thing is not necessarily either true or false; it can be both true and false.'
I believe that these assertions still make sense and do still apply to the exploration of reality through art. So as a writer I stand by them but as a citizen I cannot. As a citizen I must ask: What is true? What is false?

HAROLD PINTER • THE BIRTHDAY PARTY • 1957
The Birthday Party is the first full-length play by Harold Pinter. Although it is now one of Pinter's best-known plays, The Birthday Party was a commercial and mostly critical failure when originally performed at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, in 1958. After the play closed, however, Harold Hobson's review rescued its critical reputation, and it went on to become one of the classics of the modern stage and one of the most-frequently produced of Pinter's plays.
Stanley Webber, a failed piano player, lives in a boarding house run by Meg and Petey. On a day claimed to be Stanley's birthday by Meg, the boarding house is visited by two men, Goldberg and McCann. They throw a birthday party for Stanley through which Goldberg and McCann torture him psychologically and what seemed an innocent birthday party turns into a nightmare.
From this highlight shown above - it's the beginning of Act 1 - you can feel the ambiance of the whole play and notice that someone that enters, causing a flush of apprehension and doubt, with the use of small pauses and later characterized by the visitors, will be crucial for the drama. On these short lines you can almost touch the tension coming up.

Expiação no Jetfoil

- Miserável mentiroso!, vociferou a mulher.

O vazio. Fumo negro a coçar a carlinga. Faíscas por todo o lado. Quatrocentos pés. As mãos. E a explosão. Será que explode? Queda a pique. Queda com o fim à vista. Duzentos. Cento e noventa e nove. Cento e noventa e oitro. Cento e noventa e sete. Porra. Não fui feito para morrer assim. O que há a fazer? Rosnar? Transformar-me em folha? Desaparecer? Cento e cinquenta. As minhas unhas a afagar o resto do meu corpo. Não grito, não falo. Não me mexo. Oh. Noventa e nove. Ah. Noventa e tal. Quantos mais que me pisam. Noventa? Oitenta? É isto estar no sítio errado à hora errada. É isto um beco sem saída. Cinquenta. Não quero saber. Acabou-se. Será que explode? E me fura os tímpanos? Oh. A folha. Vinte dedos. Dezanove. Dezoito. Um rasgão a acolher-me o peito. Dez, nove, oito. E o paraíso celeste. O estrondo. O carbono a entrar-me pela goela. A comer-me o esófago e as paredes do estômago. Ainda sinto o coração que se despedaça. Ainda vejo o meu céu. Ainda sinto um útlimo desejo. Ainda estou vivo no último momento. E de seguida...
Nada.

Eu cá tenho as minhas dúvidas. Morremos apenas um pelo outro. O outro que éramos nós.

L. & P. once again

- Sei, sim, sei muita coisa.
- Ah sabes?

"A writing force"

Out of print for nearly a century, The World I Live In is Helen Keller's most personal and intellectually adventurous work—one that transforms our appreciation of her extraordinary achievements. Here this preternaturally gifted deaf and blind young woman closely describes her sensations and the workings of her imagination, while making the pro-vocative argument that the whole spectrum of the senses lies open to her through the medium of language. Standing in the line of the works of Emerson and Thoreau, The World I Live In is a profoundly suggestive exercise in self-invention, and a true, rediscovered classic of American literature.

Pain and laughter peppered with irony

The moral core of Robert Walser's art is the refusal of power; of domination...Walser's virtues are those of the most mature, most civilized art. He is a truly wonderful, heartbreaking writer.
SUSAN SONTAG
The Swiss writer Robert Walser is one of the quiet geniuses of twentieth-century literature. Largely self-taught and altogether indifferent to worldly success, Walser wrote a range of short stories, essays, as well as four novels, of which Jakob von Gunten is widely recognized as the finest. The book is a young man's inquisitive and irreverent account of life in what turns out to be the most uncanny of schools, whose beautiful sentences have the simplicity and strangeness of a painting by Henri Rousseau. It is the work of an outsider artist, a writer of uncompromising originality and disconcerting humor.
Jakob von Gunten is a seventeen-year-old runaway who enrolls in a school for servants. The Institute is a deeply mysterious place: the faculty lies asleep in a single room; the students, though subject to fierce discipline, come and go at will. Jakob, a spirited and subversive presence, keeps a journal in which he records his quirky impressions of the school, as well as his own enthusiasms and uncertainties, deliberations and dreams. And in the end, as the Institute itself dissolves around him like a dream, he steps out boldly to explore still-unimagined worlds.
If he had a hundred thousand readers, the world would be a better place.

Before it goes off

«They seem to be pleasant people. Actually, people who make efforts to be successful are terribly alike each other. They all have the same face. Not really, and yet they do. They're all alike in their rapid kindness, which just comes and goes. I think this is because of the fear which these people feel. They deal with persons and objects, one after the other, only so that they can cope again with some new thing that also seems to be demanding attention. They don't despise anyone, these good people, and yet perhaps they despise everything but they aren't allowed to show it because they're frightened of being suddenly incautious...»

Essencial.

Extreme enhancement

Since 1994, Chinese artist Liu Zheng has been working on his ambitious photographic project The Chinese. Inspired by the examples of August Sander and Diane Arbus, he has captured a people and country in a unique time of great flux. Liu seeks out moments in which archetypal Chinese characters are encountered in extreme and unexpected situations. His photographs are divided among a number of topics which betray a dark vision, albeit one that is laced with mordant humor. His main subjects to date have included street eccentrics, homeless children, transvestite performers, provincial drug traffickers, coal miners, Buddhist monks, prison inmates, Taoist priests, waxwork figures in historical museums, and the dead and dying. This is the first monograph of his work to appear outside China.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
One of China's most widely exhibited contemporary artists, Liu Zheng was born in 1969 in Wuqiang Hsien in Hebei province and grew up in Datong, a mining town in Shanxi province. After studying optical engineering at Beijing Technology Institute, he served as a professional photojournalist for Workers’ Daily from 1991 to 1997. Liu Zheng’s work has been included in such major presentations as the Venice Biennial, the Rencontres d’Arles photography festival, and Strangers: The First ICP Triennial of Photography and Video.

Compadre?!

Um livro de histórias do Alentejo. Do Alentejo profundo. Do Alentejo rural. A revolta e a resignação. A indignação e a indiferença. A fé e a incerteza. O subtítulo lança o aviso: Crença e insubmissão no Alentejo do século XX.

- "No primeiro dia do Ano Novo ninguém morreu..."
- Quando? A sério?
- Sim, ninguém morreu. Mas como é que sabes?
- Estás agarrado a esse livro e eu ouvi.
- Ouviste? Eu não disse nada. Só estou aqui a ler. Estou a ler baixinho, dentro da minha cabeça.
- Está enganado. Porque eu ouvi. Disseste: "no primeiro dia do Novo Ano ninguém morreu..."
- Não, não disse! Li!
Cansei-me. Preferia que ninguém tivesse morrido para sempre. E não começa assim, pois não? Começava: "No dia seguinte ninguém morreu."
Ouvi a tua voz.
- Deixa-me continuar. "No primeiro dia do Ano Novo ninguém morreu..."

Film seen and recommended

Eastern Promises is a 2007 Canadian drama/thriller feature film directed by David Cronenberg. The screenplay was by writer Steven Knight. The film tells of a British midwife's interactions with the Russian mafia in London and stars Viggo Mortensen and Naomi Watts. The film has been noted for its unexpected plot twist and for its violence and realistic depiction of the Russian criminal underworld, including its use of tattoos.
On January 31, 2008, the film has grossed 51 million US$ worldwide and has received a positive critical reception, appearing on several U.S. critics' "top ten films" lists for 2007, winning several awards, including the Audience Prize for best film at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Best Actor award for Mortensen at the 2007 British Independent Film Awards. The film received twelve Genie Award nominations, three Golden Globe Award nominations, and Mortensen was nominated for Best Actor at the 80th Academy Awards, losing to Daniel Day Lewis.

PLOT
The mysterious and charismatic Russian-born Nikolai Luzhin (Viggo Mortensen) is a driver for one of London's most notorious organized crime families of Eastern European origin. The family itself is part of the Vory V Zakone (Thieves in Law) criminal brotherhood. Headed by Semyon (Armin Mueller-Stahl), whose courtly charm as the welcoming proprietor of the plush Trans-Siberian restaurant impeccably masks a cold and brutal core, the family's fortunes are tested by Semyon's volatile son and enforcer, Kirill (Vincent Cassel), who is more tightly bound to Nikolai than to his own father. But Nikolai's carefully maintained existence is jarred once he crosses paths at Christmas time with Anna Khitrova (Naomi Watts), a midwife at a North London hospital. Anna is deeply affected by the desperate situation of a young teenager who dies while giving birth to a baby. Anna resolves to try to trace the baby's lineage and relatives. The girl's personal diary also survives her; it is written in Russian, and Anna seeks answers in it. Anna's mother Helen does not discourage her, but Anna's irascible Russian-born uncle Stepan urges caution. He is right to do so; by delving into the diary, Anna has accidentally unleashed the full fury of the Vory. With Semyon and Kirill closing ranks and Anna pressing her inquiries, Nikolai unexpectedly finds his loyalties divided. The family tightens its grip on him; who can, or should, he trust? Several lives - including his own - hang in the balance as a harrowing chain of murder, deceit, and retribution reverberates through the darkest corners of both the family and London itself.
To prepare for his role, Viggo Mortensen traveled alone to Moscow, St. Petersburg and the Ural Mountain region of Siberia, spending weeks driving around without a translator. He studied the gangs of the Vory V Zakone, read books on Russian prison culture and the importance of prison tattoos as criminal resumés, and perfected his character's Siberian accent and learned lines in Russian, Ukrainian and English. During filming, he used worry beads made in prison from melted-down plastic cigarette lighters and decorated his trailer with copies of Russian icons. And that's what makes a great actor from the rest of the field.

Impediram a deserção e o fechar dessas páginas.

Alimentar-me-ei do vosso amor,
Provarei os frutos dessa união,
E nessa felicidade encontrarei o meu esplendor
E a razão do meu viver.

O melhor cumprimento de onda

A agitação e o ruído ficaram lá fora.
Neste espaço, as cadeiras tradicionalmente rígidas dão lugar a confortáveis poltronas (chegadas do Japão), numa área recolhida, a média luz, animada por música chill-out – a zona lounge.

As dreadful as anything you might

how come you're not unlisted?

the men phone and ask me that.

are you really Charles Bukowski
the writer? they ask.

I'm sometimes a writer, I say.
most often I don't do anything.

listen, they ask, I like your
stuff – do you mind if I come
over and bring a couple of 6
packs?

you can bring them, I say
if you don't come in...

when the women phone, I say,
o yes, I write, I'm a writer
only I'm not writing right now.

I feel foolish phoning you,
they say, and I was surprised
to find you listed in the phone book.

I have reasons, I say,
by the way why don't you come over
for a beer?

you wouldn't mind?

and they arrive
handsome women
good of mind and body and eye.

often there isn't sex
but I'm used to that
yes it's good
very good just to look at them –
and some rare times
I have unexpected good luck
otherwise.

for a man of 55 who didn't get laid
until he was 23
and not very often until he was 50
I think that I would stay listed
until I get as much as
the average man has had.

of course, I'll have to keep
writing immortal poems
but the inspiration is there.
