"Historic Center of Macau"

World Heritage Product Fashion ShowMacau Tower Convention & Entertainment Centre - Level 4
Tomorrow, June 30 – 15:00
As part of the first “Macao Apparel Week”

The show sets a great example of Macau’s unique value. With its legacy of more than 400 years of mixing cultures, where the East joins the West, creating an all set of experiences. The examples of this understanding can be seen through many great manifestations. On architecture, on food, on language, on music, streetscape and cultural forms.

In 2005, Macau entered the World Heritage List. Through this show we relive this interchange of culture, bringing designers from different practices and areas to the same stage. From Fashion, Architecture, Product and Graphic Design, Music and Video. Despite the use of different forms they share the same goal to celebrate Macau: A Historic City. We hope through this event we can bring more and more people to share the same experience we practice everyday.
Organized by The Association of Advertising Agents of Macau and co produced by +853 Cultural Association.

A local difference

+853 is an association that was born in the city with a simple target: to feel the urban space.

In the beginning, there were only two or three streets, shared by those who came first. Then, some more arrived, each one with a street and a neighborhood, each one with his stories, arts, wishes, hopes and despairs. With shared secrets and daily discoveries. When you look to the map, you cannot see two similar streets. When you look up, you are not able to find the same window twice. This city is a human being.

Macau lives between the peace of the hidden gardens and the chaos of the impetuous cranes that changes the faces of the city. Macau lives in its difference, in the indifference of the end of the afternoons. It lives with complacence and with the impatience of the days. It lives from those who breathe and with the ones who dream. Some desire future, others prefer past. The present is around there.

Here, in +853, we just want to feel the city, with all that it has. Because we are like it and it is so much of us, between peace and impatience, we want the city with all its colours and shapes. It is not much and it is everything: the city as it really is. It is the wish of stopping in turbulent days and the desire of moving in stagnation periods. It is to live the city, to feel it, to commemorate it with everything that it has, in all the possible different ways.

Here, in +853, we don’t have the same two windows. Some are shaped and strong. Others are small and shine. Some have curtains and are made of wood. Others are painted with fresh colors. All of them are widely opened, to look to the city and let it come in.

The +853 is an association that gathers different visions and philosophies to the city and that proposes to feel the urban space through several artistic ways. It is a project of united synergies, designing moments to discover, discuss and reinvent the city. During the whole year, the days are to learn, analyze and construct, with workshops, seminars, meetings, books, music, movies, and also shared teas and coffees.

On Heritage

Traveling stands still in the heart of a city. The quietness radiates a striking line from where History flows, from the walls, the roots and the windows of another plane of time, blending the interpretation of a vivid culture. The result is a new legacy, the richness of a diverse cultural heritage embarking on a singular, endless journey.
In creativity the present is transformed, mixing the scents, the shapes and the colors through an expanding future where distinction and meaning creates this new arrangement that crosses space and imagination.
Today the heritage is not set on yesterday but on the time to come. Sewing and designing the past onto a new creative product.

Invited by The Association of Advertising Agents of Macau, AAAM, the Cultural Association +853 presents an approach to the subjects of heritage and fashion. Locating cultures, tourism and historic facts, through the eyes and lines of different artists, promoting Macau’s diversity and placing it on a unique stand of History.
THIS IS ALSO TOMORROW!

"Strolling in Macau" - Tomorrow at Bloom

We welcome you to be present at the introduction of the book "Strolling in Macau", tomorrow at 6 pm, at Bloom.

«Macau's walkability is just one of its many appealing features, which is why I believe the city deserves its own guidebook rather than a single chapter at the end of a guide to Hong Kong.
Hong Kong guidebooks tend to repeat the same standard clichés about Macau, describing it as a seedy Monte Carlo of the Orient lost in the shadows of Hong Kong. Rarely do these guides provide more detailed insights onto a city with a deeper and more nuanced history that Hong Kong, Macau's complexeties nonetheless demand more than a single chapter. They demand, in fact, an entire book.»

by the author, Steven K. Bailey

"Strolling in Macau" focuses on walking routes allowing one to discover the territory of Macau. Down to earth you can walk while enjoying the blossoms of the city. The narrow streets, the alleys, the cosy restaurants and the joint venture of a multicultural heritage that has endured for many years.

We will have a session with the Historian Jorge Cavalheiro, lecturer at the University of Macau, who will present the book while giving his thoughts on the whims of Heritage.
You can place your questions and opinions.

Please don't miss it. We will wait for you. Thank you.

Lines on Line

They came yesterday

Probably the most common historical reference to Chinese Lion Dance is the story of Nian (年). According to legend, a monster was terrorizing a small village; eating the livestock, crops and villagers. One day, a Buddhist monk visited the village and witnessed the events that had taken place. To rid the villagers of this menace, the monk instructed the villagers to get their best martial artists and build a 'monster'. In addition to this, the monk instructed the villagers to fill bamboo shoots with gunpowder and to cover the village in red decorations. The following year, when Nian came back (its coming had become an annual occurrence), the village's best martial artists ran out with their 'monster', whilst the rest of the villagers rushed out banging their pots and pans, throwing their homemade firecrackers. Seeing this, Nian fled the village, scared for its life. From this day, the Chinese perform this dance to not only celebrate their besting of Nian, but also to ward off bad-spirits or, if Nian should return, scare it away.

An Lion Dance Association of Macau was blessing all the places in our neighbourhood. Nian was hiden in Bloom, reading Dostoiévski, they didn't see him inside and he didn't care about them anymore, about the villagers.

Fresh from the oven

Just arrived today are two books from Phaidon Press, here they are:

The Silver Spoon
The bible of traditional Italian cooking, with over 2,000 recipes.

The Silver Spoon, the most influential and successful Italian cookbook of the last 50 years, is available in English for the first time. Originally published in 1950, it became an instant classic, selling over one million copies in eight editions. Considered essential in every household, it is still one of the most popular wedding presents today.

The Silver Spoon was conceived and first published by Domus, the design and architectural magazine famously directed by Giò Ponti from the 1920s to the 70s. A select group of cooking experts was commissioned to collect hundreds of traditional Italian recipes and make them available for the first time to a wider modern audience.

In the process, they updated ingredients, quantities and methods to suit contemporary tastes and customs, at the same time preserving the memory of ancient recipes for future generations. They furthermore included modern recipes from some of the most famous Italian chefs, resulting in a style of cooking that appeals to the gourmet chef and the amateur enthusiast alike.

A comprehensive and lively book, its uniquely stylish and user-friendly format makes it accessible and a pleasure to read. It provides an introduction to every course, and an in-depth explanation of the main type of ingredients. Each recipe is accompanied by a recommended list of wines, whilst a section devoted to menus (seasonal, special occasions, everyday) aims to help not only with the cooking but also with the planning of the perfect culinary event.

Never translated before, The Silver Spoon has now been adapted to an international market, with every recipe scrutinized for suitability, measurements converted and methods rewritten to accommodate cultural differences, while maintaining the authenticity of real Italian cooking. The new layout emphasizes its contemporary appeal and the colour-coding of each section simplifies the process of cross-referencing ingredients and methods.

This is a monumental and unsurpassably prestigious cookbook that will share the bookshelves with classic titles such as The Joy of Cooking and Larousse Gastronomique. With over 2,000 recipes illustrated with specially commissioned art work and photography, the book is destined to become a fresh and definitive classic in the Italian cuisine booklist.

So what are you waiting for? A spoon is all you need to start digging a new way at BLOOM?

Is it you who is going to get it?

In 1988, the year before Tianammen Square Massacre, news shot through the village that Jian Ping had died. From Zhuhai City, he could see Macau just across the harbor, and apparently he had drowned while trying to swim across and smuggle himself into the country. At least, that is the information provided by the person who wrote the letter announcing Jian Ping's death.
Jian Ping had wrapped his documents and money into a bundle and tied it to his head. He waited for the sun to go down and headed to the outskirts of Zhuhai. Then with his eyes fastened on Macau, he began swimming. It was pitch black and he swam a number of miles, intending to slip secretly into Macau waters. To a Japanese, his action would probably appear unbelievably reckless. But I can understand his feelings so strongly in makes my heart ache.
Zhuhai and Macau are connected by land. You can stand on the streets of Zhuhai and look over at Macau. Just a breath away, a different country stretches out before your eyes, inhabited by the same race of people. And casinos. Macau has casinos. And money. Where there is money, one can do anything and go anywhere. In Macau people enjoy all kinds of freedoms, every freedom there is. But that freedom, we hear, is guarded by border patrols and surrounded by a tall wall wired with high-power voltage. Could there be a more cruel place on earth?

Go in pieces

This groaning, bedridden form is not Shizuko Akashi. Miss Akashi, a 31 year-old supermarket cashier, died on March 20, 1995, the moment her brain was so severely starved for oxygen that she permanently forgot her name, the face of her best friend from high school, and even her place of work. Not that she could work were her mind still present; the sarin gas that irrevocably corroded her nervous system has confined her to a wheelchair for the past decade, most of which has been spent in hospitals. In any case, she's no longer really there. There is someone there, someone who may dimly perceive that once she was something more: a whole woman who loved going out for noodles with her family, who maybe read young men's hipster fashion magazines when she was slacking off at work, who might have had a secret crush on the grim, stocky guy who came in several times a week to buy a pre-made lunch box. But that woman is no longer.

A presence has taken her place, living in the broken shell of the woman who was before. The presence is frightened, confused. The name of this new presence is Shizuko Akashi, but she has only recently learned how to say it. She has no memories of the life that the other Shizuko lived prior to the attacks. Miss Akashi's older brother, her primary caretaker, may sing to her or relate the latest family gossip when he washes her hair or assists her when she eats, but it is someone else he cares for and talks to. Shizuko Akashi is gone.

Shizuko Akashi and her brother Tatsuo are two of the testemonies interviewed by Haruki Murakami that forms a document that is not only the diary of a moment but the portrait of a whole society. The interviews spread themselves into a vast compendium of short stories. Each one branches out or growns into a colective memory of the Japanese nation. They were all conected to the event that blew in the underground stations of Tokyo where the Subway Sarin Incident happened, perpetrated by Aum Shinrikyo the Japanese religious group founded by Shoko Asahara, back on the 20th of March 1995.

This is a book that you can read in pieces. It lasts forever and you can get on at any station. Why not start with it at BLOOM?

Um Bestiário Poético

Nem sempre é fácil
olhar o animal
mesmo que ele te olhe
sem medo ou
ódio
fá-lo tão fixamente
que parece desdenhar
o seu subtil segredo
parece melhor sentir
a evidência do mundo
que de noite e dia
ruidosamente
perfura e corrói
o silêncio da alma

Jean Follain

Tell me who you are
I'll tell you who you hang with

[Are you an Early Adopter, a Innovator, a Laggard or a Luddite?]

An Early Adopter is a person who embraces new technology or new ideas before most other people do. Early adopters tend to buy or try out new stuff, and new versions of existing ways of life, sooner than most of their peers. According to a theory called Diffusion of Innovations (DoI) formulated by Everett Rogers, Early Adopters make up 13.5 percent of the population.

Early Adopters, while eager to explore new options in technology and in other subjects of life, are not the most daring, and are not especially prone to taking risks. That role, according to Rogers, is played by a small minority of people called Innovators. Only one person in 40 is of this type. They are the people most likely to conceive and develop new methodologies and technologies, and who often end up running large corporations or founding new ones.

Early Adopters and Innovators have counterparts, known as Laggards and Luddites, at the opposite end of the human spectrum. Laggards are slow or reluctant to embrace new technology because of disinterest or financial constraints. Luddites actively fear or loathe new technology and new experiences, especially those forms they believe threaten existing jobs. Luddites have mechanical jobs for life, they don't use their creativity and most of them watch TV and hardly read a book.

[VERSÃO DE ZURIQUE]

Sr. Bertolt Keuner

Fuck!

Yeah, I was really nervous.
Yes, I was so nervous I couldn't believe it.
It was crazy. So long. So many years and then there I was, waiting. Waiting just a bit with all the world in my hands.
Yeah, that was all my world. And my hands, I kept them with me all the time. There was nothing more.
That was the reason for what I lived untill then. For what I was born. And standing there I couldn't believe it. Oh fuck, that was the day. Gouge away.
And so it was. The lights broke down, the smoke came, everyone around me shouted and jumped. Raised their hands. And I thought "Fuck, this is it, this is the day, this is now and I'm here!"
And so I jumped, I raised my hands, I shouted the hell out of me. I couldn't believe a minute of what was happening. And I didn't care.
I didn't care if that was a dream or not. If I was just sleeping or if someone was spitting a curse upon me. I really didn't care at all...
And the smoke passed away, the lights were just this crazy as I was, as everybody was. The sound bursting in my ears and the rest of everything around me, wow!
They came, that I remember. After that I just don't know, I can try to make an idea if somebody asks. I can try myself out, but I doubt it could be the truth. If it could be what other people say. I can try to recall some of the words like "your dad is rich and your mama is a pretty face...", or something like that, but right now isn't really important.
I was so nervous and then there was this calmness, this nothing I can say or explain and suddenly I was not there: I was out of my mind.
And fuck, that was good!

Criar o galo do vizinho

Before you go to bed

Tonight at BLOOM TV we have a master joint venture between Jeremy Irons and Samuel Beckett: Ohio Impromptu.

Ohio Impromptu is a short play by Samuel Beckectt. Written in English in 1980, it began as a favour to Stan Gontarski, who requested a dramatic piece to be performed at an academic symposium in Columbus, Ohio in honour of Beckett’s seventy-fifth birthday. Beckett hesitantly agreed and began work on the play at the end of March and the first week of April, 1980.

From the original play Charles Sturridge directs this piece of twelve minutes in a simple way. Taken from the Beckett on Film project modern cinematic techniques allowed the characters, Reader and Listener, to both be played by the same actor, the great Jeremy Irons, following the interpretation that they are really elements in the one personality. In the text the pair only look directly at each other at the very end but in this production they communicate visually throughout.

The synopsis
Two identical black clad characters with long grey hair (a Reader and a Listener) sit at a table. The Reader reads from a small book (described as "a sad tale"), and the listener, never speaking, prompts him to stop, start and repeat with knocking on the table. The play ends when the Reader finds that there is "no more to tell" from the book.

For more on Beckett check our side, and abandoned, blog SAMUEL BECKETT 100.

Enjoy!

E do frio no Inverno.
As cores fazem o resto. Espalham a luz, acolhem o som e a humidade.
Aqui faz húmido. E muito calor.

Quando passo no corredor cruzo-me com outra pessoa.

Crying, shiku shiku
Reluctantly, shibu shibu
Repeatedly, tabi tabi
Just in time, giri giri
Hara hara, nervous heartbeat
Kira kira, glittering sparkle
Chika chika, the flickering light of the stars
Doki doki, the hammering beat of my heart

I'm messed up, mecha mecha
But you laugh, gera gera
In the lightning, goro goro
And your eyes, pika pika
Kisu kisu by the river
Gusha gusha, that flows so slow
Zaa zaa, in the sound of the pouring rain
Chiku chiku, when will I see you again?

Nervous Heartbeat
[MOMUS ON HIS LAST ALBUM "OCKY MILK"]
He said: «I want to make something as static, as friendly, as consensual, as self-effacing, as Japan itself. It will be a feminine record and a friendly record. It will - it should - contain the deep sensuality of Renaissance lute music, or bossa nova. You should be able to put it on and just let it hover in the background all the way through, structuring your contentment in a self-effacing, classical, cool and elegant way. I don't know if I'm capable of making music that serene and sensual, but I want to try.»

I'm all in Japan. Reading Grotesque from Natsuo Kirino and stepping my feet into Underground by Murakami. Each one gives a life experience of japanese exuberance, zest and history. It's all there. The social report, the verve and the damnation! It gives you as much as you can get... and the thing is that I'm not in Macau anymore, I'm living in the P Ward of a Tokyo Station with a nervous heartbeat!
This song is the best you can get for you to carry on and give me your hand on this trip. Come, it's beautiful!

Proust é considerado o precursor do romance contemporâneo.

Portrait of the Rising Dragon

Basil Pao, author of China Revealed, featured last Sunday - June 17th, South China Morning Post Magazine.
The book was a result of Basil's travellings throughout China, in the search and discovery of his own roots:

China, a country of 1.3 billion people in the grip of an industrial revolution absorbing a large part of the world's resources, was until relatively recently a closed book to most in the West. With the advent of the Olympic Games in Beijing more and more people will visit this vast country and with that in mind the Hong-Kong based, internationally celebrated photographer and writer Basil Pao determined to travel through every province of China, recording history and landscape, people and places, to give a comprehensive snapshot of China today. By turns lyrical and
exquisite, stark and brutal, his informative text and powerful photographs show a country in transition. A country whose four thousand years of cultural history are being rediscovered, and where new urban wealth and rural poverty coexist uneasily as a new regime tackles a legacy of corruption, of anarchy under Mao's cultural revolution and repression in its aftermath. CHINA REVEALED is a profoundly important and visually stunning record of one of the most powerful nations on earth.

No Pavilhão Hermann

The evidence

We where supposed to meet at The Hub.
"The Hub", she said. I can still hear it well.
And now - and ever! - I don't know what she ment by that.
"Meet me at The Hub", she didn't care to look at me, she was just staring outside over the window. I was just amazed with all and could not find my reason to ask her what was she talking about.
And as she came she left. In the oblivion.
The only thing I've got now - almost at the end! - is that: "The Hub".
I'm gazing through Centaurium Phive, my heart is aching, shaping out bruises, maybe someone somewhere can help me. Maybe "The Hub" is just there around the corner where I can finally meet her.
One hundred years passed and I'm still gliding up her voice. Her shadow waving goodbye. Crafting the infinite with detail. From planet to planet.
That's all I have, dwelling and scratching down my whole life through the remains of my last memory. The only left to tell.
And I just don't know how to.

Beckett on Bloom

«KEN JORDAN: How did you first hear of Waiting for Godot?
BARNEY ROSSET: Sylvia Beach, who was Joyce's publisher in Paris and the owner of the Shakespeare and Co. bookstore, called me. She knew about Grove, one way or another, and she thought maybe we would like to publish Godot. I admired her very much; I was really struck by her effort, and she bolstered my involvement with the play a great deal. Beckett had already been turned down by Simon & Schuster. All of the established publishers would have had a much better chance of doing Beckett than Grove, right? They could have paid five times as much, but nobody wanted it. Nobody was interested. The same was true of Ionesco. The Bald Soprano was put on in Paris and got a lot of attention. Don Allen, who was important editor at Grove in the beginning, liked Ionesco very early. Beckett and Ionesco were on the scene together. They liked each other. I never heard one say anything bad about the other. At a much later date, I think Ionesco became jealous because he never achieved the same level of acclaim as Beckett … and he became a nasty son of a bitch, very reactionary as he got older. But they did admire each other. You have to remember that they both wrote in French, though neither one had French as his native language. Both were not young men when they started to get recognition. Both were struggling to make it in the theatre, blasting away at the existing structure.
KJ: Do you remember when you met Beckett?
BR: I remember the exact moment. It was in the bar of the Pont Royal Hotel, which is next door to Gallimard. And at that time Sartre hung out there, as did Camus, and so on. I was with Loly, my wife at the time, and we were to meet Beckett at six for a drink. This very handsome walked in wearing a raincoat and said, "Hi, nice to meet you. I've only got forty minutes." He was all set to get rid of us! At four that morning he was buying us champagne.
KJ: So you hit it off well.
BR: Right away. He was so gentle and charming. Kind.
KJ: Beckett was extremely loyal to Grove Press, and you became close friends. How did Beckett feel about the other books that Grove published - writers like the Beats, Henry Miller?
BR: I took him to lunch with Henry Miller after we won the Tropic of Cancer verdict in Chicago. They had known each other from the thirties; they did not like each other. Everything that you read about these two would tell you that they were not easy people to get along with. But when I brought them together, each of them told me afterwards, "Boy, has he changed! He's so nice now." I don't know what Beckett thought about Miller's writing. In one of his early letters he asked if I had read J. D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye. He said he really liked it. William Burroughs was a writer he particularly didn't understand. There is a famous anecdote about a meeting between Burroughs and Beckett, which took place in Maurice Girodias's restaurant. I remember sitting next to Sam, while Burroughs, who worshipped Beckett, was explaining to him how you do cut-ups. Beckett said to Bill, "That's not writing, that's plumbing." Allen Ginsberg and Burroughs were very unusual in the sense that they understood that Beckett was very important at that time. They wanted him, almost desperately, to recognize them, and he just didn't seem to connect. It wasn't dislike, it was just … non-togetherness. He just didn't get it. If he had read anything of Burroughs before he started doing the cut-ups maybe he'd have gotten it But the Beats didn't impinge upon his consciousness. Trocchi did. Anything of Alex Trocchi's.
KJ: When you published Godot you couldn't have thought of it as a potentially popular title.
BR: We only printed something like a thousand copies, and the first year it sold about four hundred. It wasn't until the play was produced on Broadway a couple of years later - with Bert Lahr playing Estragon - that the book started to sell, though the production only lasted six weeks in New York. The audience walked out and Walter Winchell denounced it as the new Communist propaganda. But that production made it famous.
KJ: How many copies of Godot did Grove end up selling?
BR: Well over two million.»

Sorry for the absence

Since the Pixies broke up in 1993, and since Kurt Cobain paid tribute to them in an interview, the Boston band's popularity has steadily risen. Directed by Steven Cantor and Matthew Galkin, loudQUIETloud follows the Pixies on their 2004 reunion tour, in which every show sold out in minutes.

Cantor and Galkin's film of the band's immensely successful 2004 reunion tour has been trailed elsewhere as some sensationally lurid backstage soap, complete with epic conflict, grand neuroses and spectacular falls from the wagon. In fact, it's a subtle, sensitive record of a group of people struggling to figure out what they once achieved, what it meant, and how they might somehow start again. It's the kind of rock doc HBO-auteur Alan Ball might have drafted - the story of a surrogate family where no one communicates, everything is swept under the carpet, and the very real midlife horrors of life and death find odd correlatives in the dream-logic of song.

By far loudQUIETloud is not a documentary about The Pixies reunion. It was made by heart and it was the true testemony of something that was happening in real time. It gives you all, the glimpse of the past, the answers to the death of the Pixies and all the atmosphere that surrounded its return. It's so true on the passion that makes you cry.

Thankfuly to YOUTUBE we can get amazing parts of this film. Later we will have it at Bloom and probably we will make a screening of it somewhere in Macau. But untill then you can get this taste of it. Please enjoy BLOOM TV and visit us any time!

From MCCM with love

Our dear MCCM Creations, from Hong Kong, which we all had the chance to "meet" with Peter Suart and "The Black Book of Falling" (see March posts), is lauching a new photographic book, Our Home, Shek Kip Mei 1954-2006 By Vincent Yu, and exhibiting the photos that compose the book, in the place where they were shot, in Shek Kip Mei Estate. It is sure worth to visit! Click on the photo for enlarged details.

Shek Kip Mei was the first public housing estate development in Hong Kong built by the British colonial government in 1954. The resettlement project was an immediate response to the need for temporary relief as a result of the massive fire that destroyed the Shek Kip Mei squatter area on Christmas Eve 1953, when over 53,000 Chinese immigrants lost their makeshift homes overnight. However, it was also hailed as a new era for Government public housing programmes and the need to accommodate the rapidly growing population of the 1960s and 70s.

Many Hong Kong citizens share the experience of growing up witnessing the territory’s rapid transformation from a series of rural villages into the present international metropolis. Life on the Shek Kip Mei Estate can, in many ways, be interpreted as a microcosm of wider society. The estate buildings were essentially concrete bunkers lacking the basics of doors and windows, let alone the relative luxury of electricity and running water. A family of five to eight persons was crammed into a cubicle of about 120 - 200 square feet (11 - 18 square metres), with over 10 households sharing a public toilet/bathroom on the same floor… bygone days of communal living.
Intended to be a temporary resettlement, 50 years later the apartments in the Shek Kip Mei Estate are still rented out by the Government. Photojournalist Vincent Yu captured life on Shek Kip Mei Estate through his lens during its last phase of existence, before the oldest blocks were demolished in November 2006. His images document some 200 elderly residents and their ‘homes’ before they were resettled to modern high-rises, many having inhabited the crumbling estate for over five decades.

A Dancer's World

Dancers in action

THEY are filled with a quietude
And feel the dedication of their bodies
To movements that are self contained.
Challenging all the formal laws of form,
And with a symmetry that quivers
Within its own acute awareness.
As a light wave is their golden glow
That warms the sluggish outline of those static forms
Who sit and watch with riveted attention.
Now this distant world falls into focus
As the extended curve of bodies reaches
To encroach on space, where the dancers will
Surmount their earthbound earthiness.

The movement’s peak is reached, and their return

Carries the speed and swoop of unhampered swallows
While all earth’s pressures wait to converge on
Lithe limb and brain and movements ecstasy;
But their own world encases them,
And stillness reigns in that retreat
‘Where mind would scrutinise afresh,
Recalling that strange moment of great power
Which was their body’s exploration of
A unity that this instant ceased to be.
